Camps Hill Primary School

Phonics

Intent:

At Camps Hill we aim to develop confident readers and writers that can decode using their phonetic knowledge. Children will develop the skills of segmenting and blending to support their reading and spelling and progress towards becoming an independent reader and writer.

Implementation:

  • A whole school approach to teaching phonics
  • Discrete, engaging phonics lessons
  • A clear progression through phases
  • Clear modelling of sounds and strategies to help
  • Support for those children who need further support
  • Due to financial constraints, the school are currently using a mixture of book banded scheme books across the school. This is to close the gap before investing and implementing 'Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised' from September 2023

Impact:

  • No child leaves Camps Hill without passing the Year 1 screening check. Interventions are put into place early and continue into Key Stage 2 if required
  • Reading books are correctly matched to a child's phonic level
  • Half termly assessments through sound checks or screening checks
  • Target Trackers used to monitor assessments and progress through phonics phases
